Craigslist says good bye to erotic adverts

Craigslist, one of the most popular online classified adverts website is to remove its erotic services category. This follows accusation that it promotes illegal sexual encounters. Craigslist, one of the fastest growing website, it recently over took MySpace as one of the busiest sites in the world. Craigslist is not abandoning erotic services completely, it will replace that section with a new one called adult services. The new adult services section will be closely monitored by editors said Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster. He added further that “We are optimistic that the new balance struck will be an acceptable compromise,” Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster said.

Recently, series of high-profile cases has focused unwanted attention on Craigslist, one that gain most prominence was that of 23 old Phillip Markoff, who was charged with killing a young woman who offered her services as a masseuse on Craigslist. Julissa Brisman, 26, was found shot dead in a hotel room in Boston last month.

Some law enforcement officers has been critisising Craigslist, one of the most outspoken critics of the erotic services adverts was an Illinois sheriff who sued the site in a federal court. Sheriff Thomas Dart said Craigslist was failing to block offers to trade sex for money. He called the site “the single largest source of prostitution in the nation.”
